Overview
Warwick, Queensland, is home to The Abbey, a historic abbey, boutique hotel and events venue. Built in 1891 as a convent and boarding school for the Sisters of Mercy, the sandstone building was designed by Brisbane architects Simkin and Ibler in the Victorian eclectic style. Its architectural details include sandstone carvings, tracery and stained-glass panels from the Royal Bavarian Art Institute of Stained Glass in Munich.
The Abbey provides accommodation, indoor and outdoor event spaces, gardens, parking and catering, with views across Warwick and the surrounding district. It hosts weddings, receptions, corporate events, private parties and retreats. Heritage railway packages are also offered. The building previously housed nuns and students, accommodated boarders from Brisbane during World War II, and later served as a tertiary education site under the name 'Sophia' before becoming a hotel and wedding venue.
