Medieval Castle and Walled Hamlet in Castiglione d’Orcia, Tuscany

A walled medieval hamlet occupies a hilltop above the Orcia River in Castiglione d’Orcia, Tuscany, with a panorama extending across the Val d’Orcia towards the first hills of the Maremma. Its scale is unusual in its variety: more than 4,100 square metres of buildings are gathered within and around the fortifications, accompanied by approximately 21.9 hectares of predominantly wooded land.

The castle was documented in the 12th century as a Salimbeni holding, before passing to the Republic of Siena between 1250 and 1258. It served as a defensive position until the mid-16th century, when Florence’s conquest of Tuscany altered the strategic role of Sienese fortresses. Later, it became a farming estate of the Piccolomini-Clementini family. The crenellations visible today date to a late-19th-century restoration, an interpretation of medieval architecture added to the older stone walls.

Inside those walls, narrow alleys, courtyards and a two-tier Italian garden give the ensemble the character of a small, self-contained settlement. The principal castle, Building L, is arranged over four floors and culminates in a panoramic roof terrace. Its rooms include a kitchen and pantry, reception hall, private lounge, library, and eight bedrooms with three bathrooms. A southeastern wing retains an old wine cellar, cinema room and former armory, while the former church remains consecrated, with a single nave, sacristy and chapel.

The surrounding buildings reveal the former life of the hamlet in tangible detail: old cellars, a blacksmith’s workshop, carpenter’s workshop, barns and store rooms sit alongside a restaurant with professional kitchen and bar, a former event hall, and a series of apartments. There is also a 10-by-5-metre swimming pool with its changing room building. Beyond the walls, woods provide privacy and walking ground, and the ruins of a watermill follow the river to the northeast.

Extensive restoration and renovation are required throughout the complex. The castle and its immediate buildings are better preserved than the outlying rural structures, though systems, roofs and deteriorated details require attention; the church also calls for conservation work and roof renewal. With its existing breadth of spaces, former hospitality use in parts of the hamlet, pool and consecrated church, the property presents a substantial restoration project with potential for an accommodation-led future, subject to the necessary planning and technical assessments.

Val d’Orcia is one of Tuscany’s defining rural landscapes, known for its cultivated countryside and historic hill towns. Here, that wider setting is experienced from the castle’s roof terrace and from the enclosed village itself: a long-held defensive site whose built fabric still records centuries of changing use.
