Medieval Castle with Crenellated Tower in Tavoleto, Marche

In Tavoleto, a small hill village in Marche, Castello Tavoleto rises above the surrounding buildings behind high crenellated walls. Its setting brings a wide outlook across the Marche countryside, with San Marino and the sea visible in the distance, while the enclosed position of the castle preserves a notably private internal world.

The castle’s origins date to around 1290, when it was built by the Malatesta family; it was later contested by the Montefeltro. Entry is through a large internal courtyard, enclosed by the defensive walls and framed by the original nucleus of the property and its subsequent enlargements. This layered arrangement continues through the principal building, which extends across five floors.

The current owners have undertaken a considered restoration of the exterior walls, roofs, floors and technical systems, using reclaimed materials. Historic character has been retained alongside practical intervention, including an elevator serving the upper levels. On the ground floor, a reception hall presently used for banquets and ceremonies is accompanied by a large equipped kitchen. Three further halls occupy the right wing; the left includes a second kitchen, dressing rooms, bathrooms and additional rooms awaiting completion.

The first floor remains in a raw state, offering scope for a future layout suited to its next chapter. Above, five suites with private bathrooms form a substantial sleeping area on the second floor. The third and fourth floors contain two apartments with high ceilings, original beams and frescoes, described as probable private rooms of the families who held the castle. At these levels, one terrace looks towards the sea and another over the internal courtyard.

At the summit, the large crenellated tower surveys the countryside towards the coast. Below ground, a network of caves unfolds through numerous alleys and passages. Three additional towers stand along the perimeter walls; these are accessible internally and from the road, with the potential to create further suites. Castello Tavoleto is defined by this unusually complete sequence of spaces: courtyard, ceremonial rooms, unfinished volume, painted private apartments, towers and subterranean passages, all held within a medieval village setting.
