Historic Castle Tower near Todi with Tevere Valley Views

Six kilometres from the centre of Todi, Torre Izzalini occupies a green hill above the Tevere valley in Umbria. This is a substantial portion of the castle of the same name: a 470 sq m stone structure arranged across five levels, with a dual courtyard and open views across cultivated fields, farmhouses and rolling hills.

Its origins are traced to the 1200s, when the castle was built by followers of Ezzelino da Romano, the Ghibelline podestà of Verona. The building retains the sober, emphatic character suggested by that history. Natural-stone façades rise through five vertical axes beneath sloping roofs, their single windows giving the exterior a measured, fortress-like clarity.

Inside, stone and brick remain a defining presence. Vaulted ceilings and trusses accompany a sequence of rooms distributed vertically through the tower. The 180 sq m ground floor includes an entrance, five flexible rooms, two bathrooms and a storage room; the upper levels provide a series of living rooms and bedrooms, several with en-suite bathrooms. This is a layout with evident scope for a private residence, while its succession of communal and more intimate spaces also suits the building’s historic scale.

Outside, a paved forecourt sits before the house, conceived as a shaded place to pause beside the tower. Opposite lies a 2,500 sq m green area with olive groves and rustic lawn, opening towards the valley. Together, these two exterior settings give the property both a formal arrival space and a more expansive, panoramic ground.

Todi offers the medieval urban character for which this part of Umbria is known, while the surrounding landscape remains defined by hills and agricultural land. From Torre Izzalini, Orvieto is 24 km away, with Montefalco, Perugia and Assisi also within the wider Umbrian setting.
