Historic Castle in Torre Alfina, Lazio, with Renaissance Gardens and Five Towers

In Torre Alfina, a village in Lazio’s province of Viterbo, this castle brings together a documented medieval origin, successive Renaissance alterations and a late-19th-century reimagining. Its scale is substantial: approximately 5,000 square metres and 35 rooms, arranged around a fabric shaped across many centuries.

The first fortification is said to date to the Lombard period in the 8th century, when a watchtower was erected to command the surrounding territory. The Sforza della Cervara-Monaldeschi family later enlarged and enriched the early medieval structure, transforming it into a 16th-century residence. Five towers, attributed to different historical periods, remain a defining part of its silhouette.

A further chapter began after 1880, when Count and banker Edward Cahen d’Anvers acquired the property. He engaged architect Giuseppe Partini to recast the fortress in a renewed medieval idiom, while the landscape gardeners Henri and Achille Duchêne reworked its grounds. The result is a building in which restoration, revival and accumulated history are visible together, without concealing the complexity of its evolution.

Inside, a monumental Carrara-marble staircase rises from the ground floor to the first floor. There is also a gallery with paintings by artists of the period, inlaid timber vaulted ceilings, statues and marble floors. Rounded-arch windows look towards the village below and the green Lazio countryside; mullioned windows with arched surrounds, alongside openings framed in lava stone on the side bodies, add further material detail. The Renaissance gardens extend over more than 1,000 square metres, conceived with the scenic emphasis associated with the Duchênes’ intervention. Torre Alfina sits at 620 metres above sea level, in the meeting area of Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany.
