Historic Castle with Terraced Land in Rignano sull’Arno, Tuscany

In the rolling hills of Rignano sull’Arno, Tuscany, 18 km from Florence, this historic castle brings together a documented medieval past, substantial internal volume and four hectares of terraced land overlooking the Valdarno valley. Extending to approximately 980 sq m, it is currently arranged as five residential units across several levels, with restored areas set alongside spaces awaiting renovation.

The earliest known document to refer to the castle dates from 1217. Its long occupation remains legible in the fabric: medieval stone archways, stone columns and capitals in the northern wing, fireplaces carved with coats of arms, and handmade terracotta floors all survive. There are frescoed ceilings dated to 1850, traditional exposed timber ceilings and coffered chestnut ceilings; a 16th-century frescoed chapel forms part of a further approximately 200 sq m on the ground floor to be restored.

The present arrangement offers approximately 20 rooms. On the ground floor, one apartment has a large living area, kitchen, two bedrooms and bathroom, while the additional restoration area incorporates the chapel. The first floor includes a restored 75 sq m apartment and an approximately 215 sq m unit for renovation. Above, there is a restored 95 sq m apartment alongside a further approximately 200 sq m apartment requiring renovation. Historic vaulted cellars with independent access, storage rooms and service areas add another layer to the building’s working fabric.

Outside, woodland terraces are planted with chestnut and pine, with fruit trees distributed through the grounds. The estate also retains historic terraced vineyards, known as “chioppi”, which were used for wine production until the 1960s. Two traditional rural cottages stand behind the castle, contributing to the sense of a small Tuscan rural settlement gathered around the principal building.

Tuscany’s hill country has long been shaped by cultivation, stone construction and the close relationship between villages and their surrounding terrain. Here, that regional character is expressed in unusually direct terms: terraced ground, old vineyard structures, a chapel and cellars, all attached to a castle whose next chapter would involve the careful restoration of its remaining unrenovated spaces.
